Representative of the "new south", Cobb County is part of the booming
Atlanta metropolitan area. Its county seat, Marietta,
was a popular resort community in the antebellum era, known for its cooler climate
than the rest of the Georgia and South Carolina coasts. Other municipalities in
this County are Acworth, Austell,
Kennesaw, Powder Springs
and Smyrna.
What was once Cherokee Indian territory, Cobb County has continued to attract
newcomers. By 1990, fewer than half of the county's residents were Georgia natives,
a first for the region. Even more recently, the metro area of Atlanta has
experienced a 75% growth in attracting twenty-somethings from other states.
With half of the population of the entire state of Georgia residing in Atlanta,
Cobb enjoys access to a flourishing city, while retaining its southern charm.
Cobb currently has a population of approximately 657,000 residents (up from approximately 607,000 in 2000)
whose median age is 33 years old. The county offers an affordable lifestyle for
singles and families alike. The median household income here is $66,148 and the
average home price around $111,000. For those not sure about putting down roots,
rents start at roughly $460 to $550 per month.
The region offers a wealth of employment opportunities. Fortune 500 firms like
Coca Cola , Napa Auto Parts, and Home Depot
are headquartered in the area. Lockheed Martin,
IBM and Six Flags Atlanta are other prominent employers. Other employment
prospects can be found at the Marietta Daily Journal.
Relocating parents can learn about enrollment requirements at the Cobb County Board
of Education or Marietta City Schools. College and university students have their choice of several fine institutions, including Kennesaw State University,
Southern Polytechnic Institute, North Metro Tech and Chattahoochee Technical
Institute.
With a temperate year-round climate, you'll find many residents engaged in outdoor
activities such as swimming, tennis, and golf or visiting the Allatuna Dam and Lake. Locals catch musical touring acts at the Mable House Ampitheatre
while art enthusiasts enjoy the Mable House Cultural Center. Theatre buffs have a variety of choices, including the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre,
Children's Bilingual Theatre or Theatre in the Square. Others prefer to spend a day of family
fun in one of the numerous theme parks.
Of course, there is certainly no shortage of sporting events to attend. With
almost every major sport represented, fans can catch year-round action. The
1998 NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons and baseball's Atlanta Braves are long-time
Cobb County favorites. With increasing national interest in soccer, Atlanta is
represented by the Beat, the city's first pro women's soccer team, and the
Silverbacks. Ice hockey is the newest franchise to win over the area with the
Atlanta Thrashers. To avoid the traffic associated with major league games,
many prefer to use the Metropolitan Atlanta Transit Authority, or MARTA for the commute.
