Duval County Florida

D uval County, Florida is located on the northeastern tip of the state. Known for its beautiful beaches, and spectacular scenery, Duval County is home to several gorgeous cities including Jacksonville and Neptune Beach. Jacksonville, named after General Andrew Jackson, has a population of 735,617. Jacksonville was recently coined, "The Bold New City of the South,” due to its great economic structure, progressive people and affordable housing costs. Ever since Duval County's inception, it has been a county with a plan for consistent growth. In 1901 a raging fire destroyed 2,368 downtown buildings in Jacksonville, however this launched a renaissance that set the city on its modern-day path. Slowed somewhat by the depression, Jacksonville bounced back during World War II with the building of military facilities. In 1968, the city and county governments were joined to create the geographically largest city in the contiguous 48 states. At about the same time, modern skyscrapers and additional bridges were built making way for major development in the county. In 1993, the steady pace ended. The National Football League awarded a franchise to Jacksonville, catapulting the city into the national limelight and toward a new destiny.

Duval County is home to Jacksonville International Airport, and is easily accessible via Amtrak railroad and the interstate highway system. The Duval School District is comprised of 177 schools, and serves the educational needs of over 126,362 students. Overall, the schools rate very high academically and provide an excellent educational opportunity for those who attend them. Duval County is also home to over 25 community colleges in the area, plus the Florida Community College at Jacksonville with over 10,000 students enrolled annually.
