The region that encompasses the towns of Truckee and Lake Tahoe is widely considered one of the most beautiful and desirable in America. Situated amidst the Sierra Nevada mountains, both areas prove to be a popular gateway to a plethora of outdoor activities. Summers in the area are balmy during the day and cool in the evenings. Wildflowers wash the landscape in color and fragrance in the spring and summer. During the winter, the area becomes one of the most popular ski resort areas in the country, swelling the population with visitors. With a bonanza of activities, this is one of the top vacation destinations in America, and one of the most desirable locations to live. Truckee supports a population of approximately 15,000 people, representing an increase in population of around six percent in the past five years. Many of these residents live near the downtown core at the northeast edge of the lake. The average age of a resident here is 35 years old, with an annual household income of approximately $60,000 per year. The majority of people here are employed in the retail trade, followed closely by the sectors of professional services, technology and the sciences.
Home values here reflect the desirability of the area. On the 2000 Census, the median value of a Truckee home was listed at $247,800. More recently, home owners have enjoyed the appreciation of real estate prices. By some reports, it is now rare to find a home for under $250,000. Like many other popular regions in the country, Truckee has "expensive dirt", meaning that lots have become increasingly valuable, regardless of the condition of the home that sits on it. Of course, homes and lots on the lake are the most desirable, and will fetch far higher prices than those in outlying areas. With increased demand, new home production has begun, some of which offer spectacular views. In their free time, residents here enjoy the wealth of outdoor activities offered in this magnificent region. Both Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe offer crystalline blue waters which prove to be an ideal place for boating, fishing, and water sports. In the winter time, the area offers some of the best skiing opportunities in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Locals have easy access to such renowned snow resorts as Squaw Valley, Sugar Bowl, Northstar, Alpine Meadows, and Soda Springs. There are simply no shortage of attractions, festivals and events in this area throughout the year. The ever-popular popular Squaw Valley hosts a free live music on Thursday evenings at is outdoor plaza. On Wednesdays, locals and visitors alike gather in the same spot for the free Village Movie Series. Northstar at Tahoe hosts evening mountain bike races, a popular draw for both courageous competitors and spectators alike. If you are an antique car buff, there are several antique and specialty car races and shows throughout the area. These draw car owners from across the country, perhaps as an excuse to vacation in this magnificent area.
For the price of a cable car ride, you can experience the annual Squaw Valley Bluegrass Festival. Held on the greens at High Camp, the festival draws bluegrass newcomers and legends alike to play. For amateur athletes, the Donner Lake Triathlon is a popular draw, and a challenge for beginners and experts alike. Equestrians can take part in the Tevis Cup Horse Race. Called "a challenge in which every rider can be a hero, if only to himself", this is an amateur event that summons riders over a hundred miles from Squaw Valley to Auburn. The region that encompasses the towns of both Truckee and Lake Tahoe is an ideal location for those who appreciate clean mountain air, plenty of sunshine, and a laid-back lifestyle. Whether you are a rugged outdoorsman, or simply appreciate spectacular views, this region has something for everyone.
