Originally the land where the city currently rests was part of two large Spanish
land grants. In 1867, a New Hampshire dentist headed west and purchased both
sections and combined them into a large sheep ranch. He first sold right-of-way
rights to Southern Pacific Railroad and the first train came through the area in
1874. This move brought many people clamoring to the West through the area. In
1886, he sold the land to speculators and a company was formed to develop the
region.
The Lockheed Company was located in Burbank from 1932 until the late 1990s. Burbank
saw its greatest growth during World War II due to Lockheed's wartime manufacturing
activities. The Bob Hope Airport (formerly known as the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena
airport), is the second-biggest airport in Los Angeles County after LAX and one of
the most active in the United States.
Another important key to Burbank's growth and economic strength has been the
First National Pictures bought up a 78-acre site in the
1920's. The company was soon taken over by another young company founded by four
brothers by the name of Warner. On October 23, 1927, motion picture history was
made when Warner Bros. released the first all-talking movie, The Jazz Singer.
Other companies soon followed. Columbia Pictures purchased property in Burbank
for outdoor shooting. Walt Disney's company, which had outgrown its Hollywood
quarters, bought 51 acres in Burbank. Disney's million-dollar studio was completed
in 1939 on Buena Vista Street. Then in the 60s and 70s more of the Hollywood
industry began relocating to Burbank. NBC moved its network television
headquarters to its new location at Olive and Alameda avenues. By 1962, NBC's
multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art complex was completed.
